April 1919. "Detroit -- Fyfe Building and United Methodist Church from Grand Circus Park." 8x10 inch dry plate glass negative, Detroit Publishing Company. View full size.
This is now the Fyfe Apartments, but it was originally a giant shoe store. R.H. Fyfe was a cobbler turned shoe retailer. When his store burned down in 1917, Fyfe -- at age 78 -- decided to build the largest shoe store on earth. It opened in 1919 with 10 stories of shoes. Fyfe got to enjoy his store for twelve more years. His company was there until 1971. After it folded, the building became apartments.
Detroit, 1919 and nary a car in sight.
You like it? You can have it: Custom Model Railroads offers it (in both HO and N scales).
The Fyfe Building is still there and still looking good. It's apparently an apartment building these days, with the Foxtown Market on the first floor.
