"Elks Temple, Monroe Avenue, Detroit." Next door to the Temple Theatre, where a poster advertises performances the week of May 1, 1910, of "School Boys and Girls," starring the English boy soprano Albert Hole. 8x10 glass negative, Detroit Publishing Co. View full size.
Here's another, distant view of the Elks Temple and the Temple Theatre. The Wonderland building was an entertainment complex on the other side of the theater. The Elks seem to have owned the Temple Theatre, but Wonderland put on the vaudeville shows (continuously!). The Wonderland building also had a museum of oddities and lots of POOL. Some of the acts included: "Will Rogers, Buster Keaton, Fred and Adele Astaire, George Burns, Jack Benny, Harry Houdini and W.C. Fields". That block is now an office building.
Very beautiful architectural facades there.
Can someone please offer more of an explanation than mine of what is hanging from the flagpole on the front of the Elks Temple? Besides the obvious (U.S. flag), it appears to be too translucent to be a flag.
Now we know how many Holes it took to fill the Temple Theatre.
