Manhattan circa 1916. "Fifth Avenue from Forty-Second Street." At right, the lions of the New York Public Library. 5x7 inch glass negative, Detroit Publishing Company. View full size.
The New York Public Library lions had been in place for five years when this photo was taken. (Below: in the sculptor's studio, 1910.) You'll hear that they are Patience and Fortitude, names bestowed by Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia during the Great Depression; but originally they were dubbed Leo Astor and Leo Lenox, after NYPL founders.
They have been well cared for with regular cleaning and restoration (below: 2019, $270,000.)
It is amazing how quickly automobiles overcame horse-drawn vehicles as the norm in this period.
