Concord’s Swenson Quarry to Reopen!

This photo was surely taken on Rattlesnake Hill, where all Concord granite was quarried, at least until a couple of years ago. My sad duty to provide the Shorpy-seeking-public with an article link about the closing was eclipsed by news of an imminent reopening!

Three Horsepower and a Wooden Cart

That wooden cart has thousands of pounds of granite in it and is motivated by three horses. Why can't our giant US pickup trucks costing between 50 and 100 thousand dollars and have an average of 400 horsepower do this? I worked with a guy that had a new truck, he told me he bought a trailer to tow behind it. I asked what the trailer was for, he said mulch, I said why not just put it in your truck? He said "I'm not putting mulch in my truck."
