June 1939. "A ghost mining town. Pony, Montana." Medium format acetate negative by Arthur Rothstein for the Farm Security Administration. View full size.
I surfed individual grille designs for various car makes and model years (1931 - 1936) including Autocar, Buick, Chrysler, Dodge, Ford, Oldsmobile, Mercury, Hudson, Hupmobile and Studebaker and couldn't come up with a match for that car. Key features included the 5 horizontal segments and the unusual trim at the top. I even tried Cadillac and LaSalle although who would expect one of those to end up on its side in downtown Pony.
I stopped at 1936 as a newer car would have probably been repaired rather than dumped like that.

Thanks for spotting that. Studebaker1913 was correct, it was a tough 4 years. As Dave points out, it looks like fire consumed the glazing and the tires.
Hard to believe a car should get to such a condition when it was only about three years old.

Free transportation. Close to fire department.
"With a population of 127, it is Montana's third most populous city ... " OK, just kidding! Well sort of: I confess to having never heard of Pony, and I don't recall it being in Sunset's Ghost Towns of the West, my family's go-to guide for memory-creating vacations as a child. Anyway, under their standards, I believe Pony would only qualify as a "Partial Ghost".
The Morris State Bank moved into this building in 1903, but it was already closed for 13 years when Rothstein took his photo.

It looks like the photo was taken right around here. Same mountains in the distance.
