Today’s Top 5

Puzzled

I was 16 at the time of this pic and should know this. What is the make of the car parked in front of the Cadillac?

[Those fender portholes were a Buick trademark! - Dave]

More Thin Mints

Ceejay, those Thin Mints are also in the trunk as well as the back seat. I hope it wasn't too hot on May 21 1958, or those Thin Mints would have been "kinda gooey"

Not so great '58

1958 was also a bad year economically; there was a short but very sharp business recession starting in late 1957 and continuing through most of 1958. It's one of the (several) things that conspired to kill Ford's Edsel.

Girl Scouts?

If this is the Girl Scout building, why does the only signage say that it’s a bank, and why is there no other entrance? Did the Girl Scout staff enter via the bank?

[The entrance is next to where it says GIRL SCOUTS OF THE U.S.A. - Dave]

The fellow in the Buick convertible

What does he have in the back seat? I'm thinking Thin Mints.

A question of some interest

And what would you earn if you answered the beckoning call of that sign over the door?
I couldn't find any info from 1958, but from a few years earlier

Not exactly exciting, but remember the inflation rates were low then as well.

[Inflation was a major concern in the 1950s. The inflation rate in 1951 was 7.9 percent; 1957, 3.3 percent; in 1958, 2.7 percent. - Dave]

The early '50s - i.e. the Korean War - yes; later, not so much: I see 0.4% for 1955 (the year of the clipping).
