Retired boxcars, so likely 36 feet long (or even 34) ... And with that in mind we find a relative

"former truss-rod, wood-body boxcar ... one of 1,000 cars built in 1912 by the Standard Steel Car Co. and operated by the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe (ATSF) RR as Class BXX"
So ~275 sq ft: cozy ... or cramped, depending on one's perspective.
