May 1943. "Bethlehem-Fairfield shipyards, Baltimore, Maryland. The canteen building at night." Acetate negative by Arthur Siegel for the Office of War Information. View full size.

Given the size of this "lunch room," I assume that most of the 27,000 employees brought their sandwiches from home.
The schedule is tight. Open only 30 minutes for normal lunchtime, 11:30 to noon, then only 20 minutes for later shifts: 7:30 to 7:50 p.m. and 3 to 3:20 a.m. No dawdling on this job.
